The European Union has made a commitment to provide a significant proportion of its energy needs from renewable sources by the year 2020. Each individual country is free to choose its own policies to promote the use of renewable energy within its borders. Some mechanisms used for promotion of renewable energy in the European Union are:
- Tax incentives to encourage the consumption of renewable energy
- Grants for renewable project investment
- Feed-in tariffs targeted toward renewable energy producers
- Legislation mandating that utilities provide a certain percentage of their power from renewable energy sources
The Green Power Market Development Group-Europe has compiled a series of country-by-country briefings on government incentives to promote renewable energy. Please click on the appropriate link at right to access the briefing on renewable energy incentives for your country of interest.
